She glanced behind her quickly, not wanting him to know that she was studying him. Being a writer is like being a spy, she thought, as she tried to capture with her pen the character of the man standing on the corner. She needed one more look, to gather clues with which to build her story. The letter in his hand — was it from his mother, his girlfriend, his boss? Or was it just a bill for his electricity? Did he look happy or was that a false smile on his face that didn’t reach his dark brown eyes? Was he trying to look nonchalant, leaning on the fence like that, waiting for someone to meet him? Or was he tired from walking all the way across town? She feigned dropping her scarf, thinking to get another look at his shoes as she bent to pick it up, but instead, she found herself face to face with him as he held it out to her. “Did you drop this beautiful scarf?” Hmmm. Yes, that was a real smile on his handsome face. She really would have to do better at observing her subjects surreptitiously. Or…maybe this time it was ok that she’d failed.

“Being a writer is like being a spy” … but if you don’t do it sureptitiously enough, you could get into trouble – but maybe nice trouble in this case 🙂
