My theme – “26 Things I’d Like To See During Our Trip To France”

R is for “le Département du Rhône”

What is this? Qu’est-ce que c’est ?

Located in the Rhône-Alpes Région of France, the Rhône département is named for the Rhône river.  This area is home to many famous wines, and its largest city, Lyon, is known as the gastronomical capital of France.  The city itself is in fact listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its importance in history dating from the Roman era.

Where is it? Où est-ce?

The Rhône département is located in the Eastern part of the Rhône-Alpes région of France, bordered by Bourgogne (Burgundy) to the North and Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur to the South. This places it perfectly in our path from Provence to Dijon, and this area looks absolutely fascinating and charming!

Why do I want to go there? Pourquoi est-ce que je veux y aller ?

History…wines…food…There are Roman ruins, Renaissance cathedrals, le Musée de Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Historical passageways (les traboules de Lyon).  I am certain that there are far too many things to see just in Lyon, but outside the city, in the Rhône-Alpes Région, I think we can find some treasures as well. Hopefully, we’ll have time to do so!

And you, dear A to Z-ers?  Et vous ?

What are your experiences in this area? Favorite sights? Restaurants? Did you try the andouilletteDites-moi

  1. That’s not a region I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. I could not get over my misconception about the sheer size of France. I always thought it quite a petite country. No! It’s huge with such diverse regions.
