Au Début – A to Z !

 

Deep breath…respire profondement…The first day of the A to Z Challenge, for a newbie blogger it’s a big challenge, I hope I can do it!

My theme – “26 Things I’d Like To See During Our Trip To France”

My husband and I are taking a long trip to France later this year, so I’m going to attempt to choose 26 things from A to Z that I would like to include in my plans. It’s hard because in this country which is so full of history and beauty and wonderful places, people and cuisine… j’ai l’embarras du choix !  (I am spoiled for choice!) Without further ado (and this is the only “intro” I’ll do, I promise…just had to get it out of my system)

A is for “Abbaye de Fontenay” 

What is this? Qu’est-ce que c’est ?

It’s a former Cistercian Abbey founded in 1118, and is one of the oldest and most complete examples of this type of Abbey in Europe. It is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where is it? Où est-ce?  

The Abbaye de Fontenay is located in the département of Côte d’Or in the Burgundy region of France, not far from the town of Montbard.

Why do I want to go there? Pourquoi est-ce que je veux y aller ?

So far I have planned 4 different régions of France to visit while we are there, and one of them is Bourgogne. The Abbaye de Fontenay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so I think it’s a must. I love architecture, I love churches, and my husband has a new camera with two new lenses that is begging to be exercised in such a place. One thing that I really loved about Ireland when we went there was the very old monastic sites and churches.  Seeing these places still “alive” in the midst of thriving towns and cities just amazes me. I plan to rent a car during our stay in Bourgogne, therefore I imagine that this will be where we will buy our French tire – un pneu français (see this post) 🙂 And indeed why not? We bought our Irish tire when visiting a monastic site, so why not continue a great tradition?
