Deep breath…respire profondement…The first day of the A to Z Challenge, for a newbie blogger it’s a big challenge, I hope I can do it!
My theme – “26 Things I’d Like To See During Our Trip To France”
My husband and I are taking a long trip to France later this year, so I’m going to attempt to choose 26 things from A to Z that I would like to include in my plans. It’s hard because in this country which is so full of history and beauty and wonderful places, people and cuisine… j’ai l’embarras du choix ! (I am spoiled for choice!) Without further ado (and this is the only “intro” I’ll do, I promise…just had to get it out of my system)
A is for “Abbaye de Fontenay”
What is this? Qu’est-ce que c’est ?
It’s a former Cistercian Abbey founded in 1118, and is one of the oldest and most complete examples of this type of Abbey in Europe. It is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Where is it? Où est-ce?
The Abbaye de Fontenay is located in the département of Côte d’Or in the Burgundy region of France, not far from the town of Montbard.
Why do I want to go there? Pourquoi est-ce que je veux y aller ?
So far I have planned 4 different régions of France to visit while we are there, and one of them is Bourgogne. The Abbaye de Fontenay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so I think it’s a must. I love architecture, I love churches, and my husband has a new camera with two new lenses that is begging to be exercised in such a place. One thing that I really loved about Ireland when we went there was the very old monastic sites and churches. Seeing these places still “alive” in the midst of thriving towns and cities just amazes me. I plan to rent a car during our stay in Bourgogne, therefore I imagine that this will be where we will buy our French tire – un pneu français (see this post) 🙂 And indeed why not? We bought our Irish tire when visiting a monastic site, so why not continue a great tradition?
And you, dear A to Z-ers? Et vous ?
Have you been there? Do you have any tips for us on visiting this
Abbey?
Alors à demain, chers lecteurs ! See you tomorrow!
Well I hope you have better luck with your tires in France 🙂 It seems a tradition worth breaking.
We went to Fontrevaud and were very confused because Richard the Lionheart was buried there but we had just seen his grave a few days previously at Rouen. It turns out his heart is in Rouen but the rest of him is in Fontrevaud and he ended up with two very fine graves 🙂

Hmmm…I remember a folk tune about Richard the Lionheart, I think maybe it was sung by Steeleye Span? Anyway, I don’t think we’ll make it to Fontrevaud this time, but it looks amazing! Yes, I hope to break the tire tradition, but maybe I’ll snap a picture of my husband with the “roue de secours” anyway 😉

Great start! Congratulations on putting that step behind you. The Abbey will be compelling (what in France wouldn’t be?) and you are right – these ancient buildings continue to be the lifeblood and community gathering places for so many villages. Rich, rich family heritage everywhere. Will wait till the inevitable tire episode to use my Merde!!

Thanks! I’m really hoping to skip the tire part, but at this point it would almost be funny. Almost. Ok, not really 🙂

Not funny during, but it’s the retelling for years after. We always say “but I’m over that now”

What an interesting theme! I went to Paris many many years ago, and don’t remember much about it. But I do love the history … my more recent trip to England was full of visits to the old churches and abbeys.
I look forward to reading the rest of your plans! 🙂

I feel like I heard about it in one of the novels I read… was it Merle’s French history?… Anyhow. Sounds amazing!

Well, I’m not anywhere near skilled enough in French to attempt “Fortune de France”, so I may never know about that…I’m so jealous of truly multilingual people. My skills are up to the “Le Petit Nicolas” level…as long as I have mon dictionnaire! Thanks for stopping by! I am happy to find your blog because of A to Z! Storytellers amaze me 🙂
